I figured out how to get my Kavasoft Shoebox photo library on the Mac to be recognized, catagories and all, in Lightroom. It turns out that Shoebox can write the Category data to the images IPTC Keyword header. You can set an option in the preferences to do this, then have Shoebox add Catagories to Keywords. It has to open and modify every image, so I recommend making a backup, and planning to give the computer some time, as opening, modifying, and recompressing tens of thousands of large jpeg files is laborious. It took nearly 8 hours to get through 60 gigs of photos.
Once on the x120e, I found that the Lightroom wasn't faster than using Shoebox and Xee on the Mac. I think part of the holdup is Lightroom and part of it is the hard drive access speed.
That's a disappointing revelation. After going through the long process of moving the photo archive (copying it no less than 3 times due to the whole Catagory/Keyword debacle), to find the system still flawed was a bit of a let down.
The mac gets to soldier on with the photos for the time being, until I can figure out if there is a faster solution on the Stinkpad.
yeah. stick an ssd in it?
ReplyDeleteThat's the geek equivalent of "Draw a bird on it!"
